According to the Veterinary Surgery (Exemptions) Order 2015, veterinary physiotherapy treatment for an animal with a pre-existing condition requires consent from the veterinary surgeon who initially examined the animal. A completed veterinary referral form, signed by the veterinary surgeon, must be completed before treatment can begin. This requirement is at no cost to the owner and ensures that treatment remains transparent, non-contradictory and effective for the condition. Please find the download for the veterinary referral form at the bottom of this page.
Physiotherapy for the maintenance of a healthy animal, with no diagnosed chronic conditions, injuries or diseases, does not require consent from a veterinary surgeon; however, owners must complete the owner consent form at the bottom of this page. At the first sign of decline in the health, injury, or condition of the animal, treatment will cease, and the animal will be referred back to the veterinary surgeon for further investigation. Veterinary consent must then be obtained before treatment continues.
Additionally, the veterinary physiotherapist may ask the client for formal consent to disclose any concerns to the veterinary surgeon who has their animal under their care.
